All 1957 editorials are after W. J. Cash's associate editorship. Stuart Rabb became Associate Editor after Cash resigned at the end of May, 1941 and continued in that capacity for a year at which point, at the end of May, 1942, Burke Davis became Associate Editor. At the end of December, 1942, Editor J. E. Dowd enlisted in the Navy and turned over the editorial reins of the newspaper to Burke Davis until August 18, 1944, at which point Mr. Davis resumed his position as Associate Editor, thereby responsible for most of the editorial column. On October 6, 1945, Harry Ashmore became Associate Editor, and Burke Davis, eventually to join The Baltimore Evening Sun, became special assignments writer. In 1958, Mr. Ashmore won a Pulitzer Prize as Editor of The Arkansas Gazette, for his editorials and leadership regarding the Little Rock school integration crisis of September, 1957.

On January 9, 1947, The News was sold by the Dowds to a group of investors, including W. C. Dowd, Jr. and J. E. Dowd. Thomas L. Robinson became Publisher, J. E. Dowd became General Manager, and Harry Ashmore remained as Associate Editor until April 16, 1947. Mr. Ashmore at that time became Editor of the newspaper, and then left The News on July 26, 1947 to become Associate Editor of The Gazette. William M. Reddig, formerly of The Kansas City Star, then became Editor.

On March 5, 1948, Brodie Griffith, long-time Managing Editor of The News, was advanced to Executive Editor, listed in the latter role on the masthead for the first time. Pete McKnight, long a reporter for The News and friend to W. J. Cash during his tenure, became Managing Editor.

On August 23, 1948, Mr. Reddig's name disappeared from the masthead, albeit without comment on either the editorial page or the front page. He apparently remained, however, thereafter in his former position, as in the 60th Anniversary Edition, published December 11, 1948, he is mentioned as the most recent Editor.

On March 4, 1949, Pete McKnight became Editor, and Sports Editor Ray Howe became Managing Editor. Sportswriter Furman Bisher, who, a year later, would join The Atlanta Constitution for which he would write through age 90 in 2009, became Sports Editor.

On August 13, 1949, former Publisher W. C. Dowd, Jr., who originally hired W. J. Cash as Associate Editor, died of a heart attack at age 55.

On July 31, 1954, Mr. McKnight went on leave to become executive director of the Southern Education Reporting Service in Nashville, Tenn., with the responsibility of studying and then providing information and advice to the 17 Southern states impacted by the May 17, 1954 decision in Brown v. Board of Education, regarding how to desegregate public schools smoothly with a minimum of confusion or strife. At that time, Vic Reinemer, Associate Editor since mid-1951, took over primary editorial writing responsibilities, aided by newly hired Cecil Prince, who would become Associate Editor on October 1, 1955, after Mr. Reinemer's departure in March, 1955 to become executive secretary to Senator James Murray of Montana, Mr. Reinemer's native state. Mr. McKnight would not return to The News, instead becoming Editor of the Charlotte Observer on July 6, 1955, where he would remain through his retirement in 1976.

Beginning January 9, 1957, Cecil Prince became Editor and Perry Morgan, Associate Editor. Mr. Prince had been Associate Editor since October 1, 1955 and Mr. Morgan had been a contributing editorial writer since shortly prior to that time.

Weeks labeled (◑|JAN|◐), (◑|FEB|◐), and (◑|MAR|◐) added in the corresponding month of 2024. Dates marked "&$O'Ð♪" have a website note on editorials. (If you want to know the significance of the hieroglyph, you will have to ask the website publisher. We have no idea.) Last additions, March, 2024.

To facilitate reading organization, the headings of the editorials on the pages after June 19, 1944 are in bold print, visible in the "Engravers Bold" font, which on later versions of Windows is not included as a font. Blame Mr. Gates, not us. The font is available here for free. Once downloaded, simply click "install" at the top of the box and it will quickly load.

There are no Sunday editions of the newspaper in 1957.
