Telegram from Cash announcing to his parents his marriage to Mary in the early hours of Christmas morning, 1940. The two had eloped, convinced by Mary's friends, Frank and Mary McCleneghen, that it was time. They had talked about marriage for many months, having been regular companions since meeting in spring, 1938. Cash had ruled it out, however, until after he had finished the book. That having been accomplished in July, nothing further posed a barrier. Nevertheless, so spontaneous was the act that Cash even had to borrow Frank's college fraternity ring to use in the ceremony.
