The Frederick Apartments on Church Street in Charlotte, about three blocks from where Cash worked at The News, became his residence in fall, 1937 when he went to work full-time as associate editor, writing primarily on foreign affairs, while maintaining a regular weekly book-page column through 1938. The art deco inspired building afforded the non-driving Cash a perfect hermitage from which to walk to work and in which to accomplish his last three years of meticulous metering on the manuscript of The Mind of the South.
