The Ides of March, 1941 would prove propitious for Cash; sister Bertie would go through minor surgery to have a cyst removed from her breast and Cash would learn that he had received the long-sought Guggenheim Fellowship to afford him a year to write a novel in Mexico. While downplaying the surgery in this telegram to his father, Cash was so upset by the prospect that Bertie's husband Charles had to comfort Cash over beers in a bar near the hospital. And then on top of it all, Cash forgot to file his income tax return, due March 15 in those days.
