The most familiar photo of Cash, taken in the fall of 1940, and earmarked by Cash as his publicity photo for the book; it appeared with a review in Time in early February, 1941. When he saw it in that context, he remarked to Mary that it made him appear as a gangster. An early television generation which grew up in the Fifties, however, might tend to think it gives him more resemblance to a slightly paunched Clark Kent--which, of course, would be ironic as staff members of The News, especially friend Cam Shipp, dubbed him "Zarathustra" during the latter Thirties.
