Alfred Knopf and Cash, February 18, 1941 at the Hotel Charlotte, in their last meeting, discussing the critical praise heaped on The Mind of the South, published February 10, as well as Cash's plans for a novel about a family of scions of the Old South. Knopf looked forward to seeing whether Cash could write fiction; Cash had always viewed it as his better writing skill, yet had in mind switching to a non-fiction work should the effort flag.
