A bit of slow, studious thought on this fortuitously captured shadow and perspective in this 1998 photograph of the label of the seventh side of the fast-turning 78 r.p.m. four-record set of the original recording of the 27 minute Cash Commencement Address at the University of Texas calls to mind a collision of circumstance with the times of its production during the days immediately preceding and following December 7, 1941. The perfectly carved--not torn--notch at the upper left, visible above, and the identically formed notch at the lower left, visible in photographs at the audio sections of this site, are pictured unaltered from the time of receipt of the set from the University of Texas Recording Studios by Cash's sister Bertie in mid-December, 1941.
