News of arrest of 32 Nazi spies in and around New York City on June 28-29 as it appeared on the front page of The Charlotte News the afternoon of Cash's death, Tuesday, July 1, 1941. News release of the arrests had been delayed until June 30 so that the F.B.I.'s undercover operations would not be compromised until all of the spies were netted. Nevertheless, one, the infamous Joe K., escaped immediate arrest and was not taken into custody until August in the state of Washington. These arrests may well have put into motion events within the spy ring extending to Mexico City which resulted in Cash's death. (See "Caso de Homocidio or Felo de Se: The Death of W. J. Cash")
